Transitioning to a new country and studying English, my second language was daunting. However, the supportive environment at George Brown Polytechnic motivated me to persevere and make the most of my studies. With a background in fashion design and running my own business back home, I initially struggled with self-confidence during my first year.

A pivotal moment in my journey was the opportunity to participate in the Fashion Scholarship Fund case study competition. Despite my initial doubts, I decided to compete and ultimately won the scholarship. This achievement was significant as George Brown Polytechnic is the only Canadian institution participating in this prestigious competition.

The mentorship and support from the college faculty were instrumental in my success. I especially thank the Associate Dean and Fashion Management Program Advisors. Their guidance helped me prepare a standout resume and provided valuable referrals, leading to my first job in the industry. Their encouragement and belief in my potential gave me the courage to apply for positions that matched my skills and experience.

As an international student I was worried about my communication skills and lack of a network here because of language barriers and cultural differences, but the staff helped me in finding internships and they taught me how to write a resume and succeed in interviews (which I think is essential for everyone!). The program was practical and helpful in developing my career plan.
In addition, my professors and peers are amazing people. I learned a lot from them about cooperating in teams and producing Threads, our year-end event, and fashion shows. I had many opportunities to meet and work with designers, friends, and other creatives in Toronto.

My earliest memories involve fashion, picking out my outfits in the morning or staring in awe at the mannequins at different stores.  Growing up most kids dream of being a teacher, doctor or firefighter but I had always dreamed of being a buyer. Dreaming is something everyone does but chasing your dream is a lot harder. In 2019 I took a leap and went to the Casa Loma Campus to speak with some of the faculty and get a better understanding of the school and the program. After visiting the school, I could not wait to begin the Fashion Management program in January of 2021. Unfortunately, between that time the COVID-19 pandemic started, and all programs were moved to a virtual environment, but GBC did an impeccable job of creating a fun and interactive space in the online classroom - from group projects, breakout rooms, class polls and guest speakers. Having the chance to hear from alumni that are now working in the industry was amazing and motivating, showing that all the hard work pays off. The industry knowledge and experience that is provided to you through your professors, guest speakers and internship opportunities is unmatched and is the reason I landed a job as an Assistant Buyer. George Brown Polytechnic’s School of Fashion and Jewellery will help you achieve your dreams while making tons of friends and industry connections along the way.

The program offered the right blend of quantitative and creative courses, thereby enhancing my analytical and creative skills. Professors not only taught the modules but also offered great insight into the industry. "The Fashion Management program at George Brown Polytechnic taught me different facets of the fashion industry and allowed me to build my professional portfolio through various projects and hands-on experience. "It is insanely difficult to pack into one paragraph how much I have learned from being in the GBC Fashion Management program, it is extremely diverse. So instead, I will simply say this, anyone who is willing to put the effort into their success at this school, will find results, no questions asked. You will be challenged and tested, but also supported and cheered on. As someone who has bounced back and forth from university to college, I can tell you that the staff at GBC are doing something that is rare in post-secondary education. “Being part of this program was essential for my career. I came to Canada to receive training that would lead to a Buying career. The Fashion Management program had a good balance of management and fashion essentials that enhanced my knowledge about the Canadian fashion industry. The Professors and Coordinators consistently supported me by teaching and offering advice and guidance to launch my career in the industry.

The program offers a Field Education program that allows students to start building a professional network. For top students there is an opportunity to compete with schools across North America in a case study. The prize is a trip to New York, networking with the fashion giants and a substantial cash prize. Not only did I learn about the fundamentals of the fashion industry, but I was also able to participate in activities and events that pushed me out of my comfort zone such as: being an intern at Joe Fresh, competing in the YMA FSF Case Study Competition, contributing to the planning and execution of the annual THREADS fashion show, being the general manager of a student run fashion store, participating in networking events, and so much more!
